CUNY In A Box is an academic commons built on open-source software and run by the people who use it — students, faculty, and staff across 25 campuses, working in public.
Why we built it
CUNY is the largest urban public university in the country, and for a long time the easiest way to find a colleague working on your problem was to already know them. Departments had their own tools. Campuses had their own logins. Work that should have been shared quietly stayed local.
The Commons started as a small answer to that: a single place where a group could form, publish, and keep working without asking permission or filing a ticket. It is deliberately unglamorous software. A group is a group, a document is a file, and a course site is still readable after the semester ends.
Everything here runs on Commons In A Box, an open-source platform any institution can adopt. What you see is the CUNY configuration of it — our campuses, our colors, our vocabulary — but the code belongs to everyone.
